ST. CROIX — A man was pronounced dead on the scene following an apparent hit and run that occurred during the wee hours of Friday morning, the Consortium has learned. The V.I. Police Department has since corroborated the information.
The V.I.P.D.'s Traffic Investigation Bureau was notified of the incident at about 2:58 a.m. Friday, which occurred in the vicinity of Estate Concordia West, just east of where Camp Rico Road and the Queen Mary Highway intersect, or east of Armstrong's Ice Cream.
Upon arrival to the scene, investigators observed the unresponsive body of a male individual, later identified as Troy L. Springer on the floor of the westbound lane. Springer is believed to have sustained visible injuries to the head.
Any person that leaves a scene of a collision may be in violation Virgin Islands law, the bureau said.
The bureau's preliminary investigation and the evidence at the scene indicate that Springer appeared to have been struck by a vehicle in the westbound lane. The vehicle and its operator were not at the scene, according to police.
The victim was removed from the scene by the V.I. Department Justice and was transported to the Juan F. Hospital Morgue.
