Man Found Dead at Altona Lagoon Recreational Center With Multiple Gunshot Wounds

Entrance of Altona Lagoon, where a man named Nicholas Miller, a former Superior Court marshal, was found dead with a gunshot wound to the head on Monday morning.

ST. CROIX — A man was found dead at the Altona Lagoon with multiple gunshot wounds about the body during the early morning hours of Monday, V.I.P.D. spokesman Toby Derima has confirmed to the Consortium.

Mr. Derima said the 911 Emergency Call Center received a distress call at about 3:32 a.m. from a male who was on Hospital Street, Christiansted seeking help, stating that he had been shot in the leg. Officers traveled to the area and located the male, who indicated that he was at Altona Lagoon when shots were fired and he was hit.

To further investigate the matter, officers traveled to Altona Lagoon in the vicinity of the recreational center and found the lifeless body of a male individual that sustained multiple gunshot wounds, according to the V.I.P.D. news release.

The deceased victim was identified by next of kin as 38-year-old Nicholas A. Miller, according to a police source with knowledge of the matter. The victim's identity was corroborated by Mr. Derima. Miller was a former Superior Court marshal, according to the police source.

The investigation into the matter continues and detectives are urging anyone with information on what happened to contact police by calling 911, the Crime TipLine at (340) 778-4950, or anonymously to Crime Stoppers USVI at (800) 222-TIPS.

According to the police source, no form of transportation was recovered on the scene, only the victim's body. 

Mr. Derima said the male who was seeking help sustained a gunshot wound to his right hip area. He was transported to the Juan F. Luis Hospital via ambulance where he was treated and released.

Today's homicide carries the territory's total for 2021 to twenty-two, with the overwhelming majority of the deaths — nineteen — occurring on St. Croix, followed by St. Thomas with two, and St. John with one.
