Man Fatally Shot in WICO Parking Lot

ST. THOMAS — A shooting incident early Saturday has left one man dead, the V.I. Police Department has confirmed to the Consortium. The incident occurred at 12:58 a.m. in the West Indian Company (WICO) parking lot. Previously, the VIPD said the incident occurred at the Havensight parking lot, however WICO on Tuesday confirmed at the shooting took place on its grounds.

"The West Indian Company Ltd.  is cooperating fully with the Virgin Islands Police Department to provide evidence relevant to the investigation of last weekend's shooting incident that resulted in the loss of life," said Anthony Ottley, WICO CEO. "We extend our deepest condolences to the family, friends and loved ones of Cursim Hansen.

"WICO maintains a strong security network utilizing lighting, technology and experienced personnel to ensure a safe and secure environment for those visiting our property for business or pleasure, and those who work on the property. We have the utmost confidence in our security division and the measures we and our tenants have in place."

 

According to the VIPD, upon receiving calls about the shooting, authorities quickly arrived at the scene where they found an unresponsive black male with multiple gunshot wounds in the parking lot. Emergency Medical Technicians were dispatched, but by 1:09 a.m., they confirmed that the male showed no signs of life.

The victim was later identified as 31-year-old Cursim Hansen, as confirmed by his next of kin. This death marks the 32nd homicide in the U.S. Virgin Islands for the year 2023. The tally now stands at 17 on St. Thomas and 15 on St. Croix.

The VIPD is actively seeking information regarding this incident. Authorities urge anyone with relevant details to come forward and assist in the ongoing investigation.
