ST. CROIX — A local man, Jason Phipps, is facing charges of obtaining money by false pretenses and grand larceny after surrendering himself to the police on Wednesday.

The charges stem from an investigation that began on May 15, 2023, by the Economic Crimes Unit into a complaint involving fraudulent activities related to gasoline.

The investigation revealed that Phipps allegedly siphoned gasoline valued at $1,517.66 using an account of a company he was no longer employed with. Acting on the findings, an arrest warrant was issued for the 47-year-old on August 10, 2023.

Phipps turned himself in at approximately 9:59 a.m. at the Wilbur Francis Command Police Station, where he was arrested and read his Miranda Rights. Phipps refused to sign the Miranda Rights form and invoked his Fifth Amendment Rights.

Bail for the accused was set at $20,000. Unable to post the bail amount, Phipps was remanded into custody at the John A. Bell Adult Correction Facility. He is scheduled for an Advice of Rights Hearing on Friday, September 8 at the Superior Court of the Virgin Islands.
