ST. THOMAS — A man who was once employed as a teacher in Hayden, Colorado was charged Tuesday after being extradited from the U.S. Virgin Islands, where he was hired by a private school to teach children. He will now face charges for his alleged crimes on the mainland.
James Dingle, 62, was charged with two class 3 felonies of sexual assault on a child by one in a position of trust, according to the Hayden Police Department (via local Colorado paper Steam Boat Pilot).
Dingle was arrested by federal law enforcement in St. Thomas on a warrant issued by Routt County. If found guilty, the charges carry a sentence from four years to life in prison.
Dingle is a former Routt County resident now residing in the U.S. Virgin Islands, according to the publication. The Consortium learned earlier this week that Dingle had been employed by Antilles School in St. Thomas, though he never started work. His contract has since been terminated.
Steam Boat Pilot said Dingle had left the Hayden School District earlier this year, which is where the alleged offenses were reported to have occurred, according to the court. He was last in custody in Florida while awaiting extradition back to Colorado.
The Hayden Police Department investigated the case, and the arrest was made with the assistance of the U.S. Marshal Service and U.S. Customs and Border Patrol, according to the publication.
