Man Arrested for Scamming 81-Year-Old Victim of $7,000, Police Say

ST. CROIX — VIPD detectives with the Economic Crime Unit on Thursday morning arrested Jose Bermudez, age 49 of Bugby Hole for allegedly scamming an 81-year-old man of $7,000 back in 2019, V.I.P.D. Public Information Officer Toby Derima has announced.

Bermudez was charged with obtaining money by false pretense, embezzlement by bailee, and grand larceny.

According to the police report, Bermudez was given the $7,000 by the 81-year-old man to purchase vehicles, however, the vehicles were never purchased.

Unable to post bail of $20,000, Bermudez was remanded to the Golden Grove Correctional Facility pending his advisement hearing.
