ST. CROIX — Police have arrested a man accused of going to a woman’s workplace to damage her vehicle.
Twenty-nine-year-old Raheem Wyre, a resident of Mon Bijou was charged in connection with an incident which occurred on Friday, June 10th. According to police, a witness had reported someone damaging vehicles at the Henry E. Rohlsen Airport parking lot. Police later discovered a damaged black Acura and a witness who stated that they had seen a man throwing a stone and a bottle at the windshield several times before he broke it. The witness provided a description of the suspect and noted that he had walked towards the airport's east baggage claim area.
Police later made contact with the vehicle’s owner who was unaware of the damages. She did however report that when she arrived at work that morning, she had noticed her children’s father, Raheem Wyre standing near the counter area. The woman told police that Wyre was drunk and told her that he was going to break her car glass. She further stated that he came up to the counter and called her derogatory names while threatening to kill her.
According to her report to police, Wyre also continuously called the airline telephone and her cellphone to insult her.
Police accompanied the woman to the damaged vehicle and she identified it as hers. They then informed her that the description provided by the witness matched the description of a male individual who had caused a disturbance near the airline ticket counter earlier that day. She then confirmed that Wyre fit the description provided. As part of their investigations, police reviewed surveillance footage which showed the man later identified as Wyre damaging the parked vehicle.
Police requested forensics to travel to the scene as well as a wrecker. An all-points bulletin was placed on Raheem Wyre. Two other airport employees who were parked near the victim also reported that their vehicles had sustained damages during the incident.
Police later made contact with Wyre in an attempt to arrest him but he evaded capture.
However, on Sunday officers at the airport observed a man fitting Wyre’s description in the parking lot of the airport’s main terminal entrance. An officer entered the police unit and proceeded towards the airport’s exit where she intercepted Wyre and attempted to place him under arrest. However, he reportedly fled into the bushes.
A second officer later made contact with Wyre and tased him after he attempted to evade capture yet again. He was subsequently placed under arrest and voluntarily stated that he was at the airport to pick up something. He also told police that the incident in question occurred two months ago and that he didn't know why he was being arrested. He further claimed that the victim threw a stone at the windshield of his vehicle and that he came to the airport on the day in question to damage her car. According to Wyre, he did not know that he had damaged any other vehicles. The probable cause fact sheet states that Wyre threatened the officer who tased him and also made threats against her family.
Wyre was charged with destruction of property and disturbance of the peace by threats. Both charges are categorized as crimes of domestic violence.
At his advisement hearing on Monday, the court learned that he has two previous domestic violence convictions. At the conclusion of the hearing, bail was set at $15,000 with an allowance for Wyre’s release upon the posting of 10 percent of that figure plus $1. He must sign an unsecured bond for the remainder of the bail amount and will be released into the third-party custodianship of a relative. The defendant has been ordered to have no unlawful contact with the complaining witness.
