ST. THOMAS — A man who was recently charged with assault is facing a separate set of charges in relation to a prior matter.
Rashawn Brooks was charged with disturbance of the peace, petit larceny and destruction of property following an incident on July 14th. According to the probable cause fact sheet, the complainant was an individual who had been involved in an intimate relationship with Brooks for a few months. She told police that on the night of July 14th she felt that something was wrong with Brooks.
She explained that Brooks called and told her he was coming over so she let him in. However, she noted that when he arrived he was “moving slow, like a zombie.” The woman also told police that Brooks had a “white foam around his mouth” and that she was concerned because she had never seen him like that before.
According to the account she gave police, Brooks later became visibly upset after she refused intimacy. He walked away and began looking around her apartment and she grabbed her phone out of fear, in case she needed to call the police.
The woman further told police that Brooks opened several jars of coins and emptied the contents into his pockets. She estimated that she had about $80 worth of coins. She alleges that he then tried to take her cellphone but she wrestled it away from him and retreated into her bedroom. He then left the residence in what she described as a “zombie-like fashion” and she locked the door and gate behind him.
Shortly after, she heard banging on the gate and someone shouted “open the door!” She told police that she yelled through the window “you can’t come back inside, I’m not letting you in!” She then heard banging on her windows which she described as strange as she lives on an upper floor. When she opened the window she observed Brooks outside trying to open it. According to the fact sheet, when he noticed her by the window he stuck his hand inside and pushed the screen which struck her in the head. He then began to push her entertainment center which was in front of the window, causing it to fall forward along with her television and ornaments. According to the woman, Brooks then jumped from the porch and ran away.
When police arrived on the scene, they inspected the surrounding areas but could not locate Brooks. On August 2nd he was arrested on a separate matter and police also charged him in connection with this matter.
Brooks appeared before a judge on Monday and bail was set at $2,000. The judge explained that the defendant must post the full amount in order to be released. As part of his bail conditions, he must remain at least 50 feet away from the victim at all times and is prohibited from going to her residence or having any form of contact with her.
