ST. THOMAS — Charges have been laid against a man accused of punching his ex-girlfriend to the face.
Tremoii Mills was arrested and charged with simple assault and disturbance of the peace, both crimes of domestic violence.
The charges came after the woman made contact with police on Wednesday morning and the responding officer discovered her with a swollen lip. She explained that two days earlier, Mills had texted her asking to meet up and talk. She traveled to the Savan area to meet him sometime after midnight and stayed in her vehicle with the door open while he sat on the stairs in proximity.
According to the woman, they spoke about what had gone wrong in their relationship and Mills was calm with no aggression. However, as the conversation progressed Mills apparently became angry, allegedly getting up and suddenly punching her in the mouth. She stated that there was no arguing or yelling leading up to his actions.
The victim recounted that her lip burst, causing blood to go on her hands, clothes and chest. After James struck her he immediately turned away but when she cried out he looked back and saw blood. He then begged her to come inside and allow him to clean her up. She instead drove off but he called and texted her several times asking to fix things and questioning whether she would involve the police in the matter. During her statement, the victim alleged that this was not the first time that things had turned physical between them.
On July 29th, police contacted Mills and he promised to make contact with the officer the following day. Around 10:00 a.m. the next day he was read his rights and agreed to provide a statement. During that statement, he said that he wanted to get closure with his ex-girlfriend and that he ended up hitting her after she kept lying to him. He claimed that he did not hit her with a close fist and that his hands were open but his knuckles made contact with her. He stated that when he noticed what he had done he tried to help her clean up but she drove away. Upon questioning by police, Mills further admitted that during their relationship they had previously gotten into physical fights. Mills was later placed under arrest and charged.
At his advisement hearing on Monday, bail was set at $1,000 with an allowance for his release upon the posting of 10 percent in cash. While this matter remains pending, Mills must remain at least 10 feet away from the victim at all times and has been ordered to have absolutely no contact with her.
