ST. THOMAS — A man was arrested after reportedly breaking into girlfriend's house, and threatening to kill her.
According to court documents, on Sunday afternoon police were alerted to a burglary in progress at an apartment in Paul M. Pearson Gardens. Responding officers met a woman who said that her boyfriend had broken into her residence.
The pair had recently returned from the British Virgin Islands, and the man, Albert Heywood, had reportedly gotten upset with workers at a particular business, embarrassing the woman. She said that she left him there and traveled home, only for him to arrive at her apartment shortly afterward.
Upon his arrival, the woman says that Heywood began hitting her back door with an object, causing her to fear for her safety. He eventually came around to the front of the apartment and began squeezing through the louvers in the window, destroying the window screen in the process.
While Heywood was forcing his way into her apartment, the woman said she was on the phone with 911, as she was in fear for her life during the entire incident. Once her boyfriend was completely inside the apartment, she said he threatened to kill her since she called the police. He reportedly snatched the phone out of her hand and fled through the back door.
While still at the scene, officers noticed Heywood approaching the back door to the apartment, and arrested him. He was charged with simple assault, second-degree burglary, destruction of property, and disturbance of the peace — all as acts of domestic violence. He was also charged with grand larceny, and remanded into custody to await his advice of rights hearing.
While records of court proceedings have not yet been made available to the public as of press time, court documents indicate that a third party has made a bail payment of $1000 on his behalf. The next court appearance for Mr. Heywood has been scheduled for November 8.
