ST. CROIX — A St. Croix resident has been arrested and charged with assault and other offenses after he allegedly attacked his ex-girlfriend.
Kenrick Duinkerk was recently arrested on second and third-degree assault, simple assault and battery, and destruction of property — all as crimes of domestic violence. He was also charged with disturbance of the peace by fighting.
The arrest follows a report by his ex-girlfriend on September 14th, who stated that the issue stemmed from a matter in which the two could not come to an agreement. According to the probable cause fact sheet, Duinkerk began provoking the victim while she ignored him. She traveled outside of the residence and onto the beach where she remained throughout the night of September 13th. About 5:45 a.m. on September 14th, she tried to de-escalate the situation but Duinkerk began cursing at her, asking her to get away from him. She stated that she returned to the beach to watch the sunrise, when suddenly Duinkerk approached her, grabbed her left arm and ordered her to take a walk with him. She declined and Duinkerk reportedly left her alone and continued walking on the beach.
Shortly after, Duinkerk returned and entered the residence where the victim was and continued to insult her. She stated that he fell asleep shortly after and she decided to leave the residence.
Upon entering her vehicle and attempting to drive towards the exit, she observed Duinkerk running towards the vehicle. She sped up to get away from him, however he was able to open the passenger’s side front door and jumped into the vehicle.
According to the probable cause fact sheet, she immediately pressed on the brake, causing the vehicle to come to an abrupt stop which thrusted Duinkerk forward, causing him to collide with the dashboard/windscreen. She stated that Duinkerk then punched her on the right side of her face while calling her a ‘dumb bitch’. The suspect allegedly continued to insult his ex-girlfriend and began tearing her clothing that was on the front seat.
Shortly after, he began throwing the clothes outside of her vehicle. The woman said she then got out of the vehicle and started gathering up her belongings from the ground. That’s when Duinkerk grabbed her by the throat, shoved her against the vehicle and said, ‘I will kill you!’, using expletives. She then pleaded with Duinkerk to stop, but instead he grabbed her by the hair and placed a sharp metal object to her neck (not making contact), again saying that he would kill her, according to the probable cause fact sheet.
The alleged victim was slowly able to move away while Duinkerk entered her vehicle. She advised him that she would notify 911 if he left with her vehicle. Duinkerk nonetheless drove the vehicle about five feet and then parked it once he observed that she was making a call. He then exited the vehicle, entered the residence and went on a bed.
The victim sustained visible bruises to both her forearms, neck, right eye, upper back and to the left side of her forehead, according to the probable cause fact sheet.
In the V.I. Superior Court on Friday, a judge ruled that Duinkerk was to post $101 in cash and the remainder of the $1,000 bail as an unsecured bond to secure his release. He is to surrender his passport and is not allowed to leave St Croix without written authorization from the court. He has been ordered to have no contact with the victim or any witnesses, and must to stay at least 1,000 ft away from the victim.
Duinkerk must also report to the Office of Probation every Tuesday.
