ST. CROIX — A 52-year-old man accused of using a worthless check to pay for a Crowley shipment was returned to St. Croix last week after being taken into custody in Illinois on an outstanding Virgin Islands warrant, according to the V.I. Police Department.
Police said the case began on February 20, when detectives with the Economic Crimes Unit opened an investigation into Mohammad Suid. According to VIPD, the investigation found that Suid knowingly and designedly, by false or fraudulent representations or pretenses, defrauded Crowley of more than $2,000 by paying for a shipment of merchandise with a worthless check and causing additional fees to be incurred, resulting in a loss.
As a result of the investigation, police said an arrest warrant for Suid was entered into the National Crime Information Center database. On March 18, he was apprehended in Illinois after deplaning a flight from Jordan because of the outstanding warrant, according to VIPD.
Police said the department’s Extradition Unit escorted Suid to the territory on March 27, where Economic Crime Unit detectives placed him under arrest at Henry E. Rohlsen Airport. He was then transported to the Wilbur H. Francis Police Operation Building, where he was served the arrest warrant and advised of his Miranda Rights.
Suid, 52, was subsequently booked and charged with drawing and delivering worthless checks, participating in frauds on creditors, and obtaining money by false pretense, police said.
Bail was set at $7,000. Suid was unable to post bail and was remanded to the John A. Bell Adult Correctional Facility pending his Advice of Rights hearing.
