ST. CROIX — Kennedy Navarro remains detained after police said he blocked a woman from exiting her vehicle, punched through the driver’s side window and injured her before later resisting officers and biting a hospital security officer.
During a court hearing Monday, Magistrate Cristopher Timmons found probable cause to uphold a charge of destruction of property as a crime of domestic violence. The proceeding was postponed because additional information was needed from Navarro before the matter could continue.
He remains in custody pending a hearing scheduled for Wednesday.
Police were called shortly before 3 a.m. Saturday to a bar on Queen Street in Frederiksted. Responding officers met an emergency medical technician who said he had treated a woman for lacerations to her arm caused by broken glass.
The woman was traveling to a nearby police station, where officers met her in the parking lot.
She told police that she had been at the bar when she saw Navarro, with whom she has had an “on-and-off” relationship for nearly 20 years. The woman said she avoided him because he was heavily intoxicated.
Navarro reportedly saw her speaking with another man and approached her, leading to an argument.
The woman left the first bar and drove to another establishment near the Emile Henderson Fire Station. After she parked, Navarro allegedly drove up beside her vehicle and positioned his Jeep close enough to prevent her from getting out.
He then reportedly exited his vehicle and repeatedly struck the driver’s side window, shattering the glass and injuring the woman’s left shoulder. Officers observed several small cuts and glass splinters in her shoulder.
Navarro was also at the police station. According to police, he ignored officers’ questions and instead complained of pain in his hands, arms and left knee.
After being formally detained, Navarro allegedly removed his clothing and refused to put it back on. Emergency medical technicians were called to provide treatment, but he requested to be taken to Juan F. Luis Hospital.
Police said that while he was naked inside the ambulance, Navarro began touching himself inappropriately. Medical staff attended to him immediately after he arrived at the hospital.
Following treatment and discharge, Navarro reportedly resisted being returned to police custody and had to be physically carried out of the hospital.
During the ensuing struggle, he allegedly bit a hospital security officer on the thumb, drawing blood.
Navarro was returned to the police station and charged with destruction of property as a crime of domestic violence, disturbance of the peace, false imprisonment, simple assault and battery, and obscene and indecent conduct.
He was remanded into custody pending his advice of rights hearing.
