ST. CROIX — A preliminary investigation by the V.I. Police Department has found that a verbal altercation led to the early-morning shooting at Luna Bar in Peter’s Rest that left two people dead and two others injured on Sunday.

The two men killed in the shooting have been identified as 31-year-old Wahili James and 34-year-old Samuel Rivera, VIPD said. Both were identified by family members.

The shooting was reported at approximately 3:45 a.m. on Sunday, June 7, when the 911 Emergency Call Center received reports of a shooting with possible gunshot victims at Luna Bar in Peter’s Rest, St. Croix.

VIPD said the incident left four people shot. James and Rivera succumbed to their injuries, while the two surviving gunshot victims — a minor and a 30-year-old man — are both in stable condition.

The department had earlier confirmed to the Consortium that four people had been shot, with two fatalities and two victims receiving treatment. At that time, VIPD said the motive had not yet been determined and that the identities of the deceased were being withheld pending notification of next of kin.

The updated release now states that preliminary information points to a verbal dispute as the lead-up to the shooting.

The Criminal Investigation Bureau is continuing to investigate the fatal incident. VIPD is asking anyone with information to contact 911, CIB at 340-778-2211, or Crime Stoppers USVI at 1-800-222-8477.
