ST. CROIX — Omani Abraham is facing felony firearm charges after police executing an arrest warrant for another man entered a Croixville apartment and recovered a loaded Glock 27 handgun and additional ammunition.
According to court documents, officers assembled at the apartment during the predawn hours Monday to execute an arrest warrant for Akeem Matthew.
Police reportedly announced their presence but received no response. Officers then breached the front door and entered the residence.
Inside, they found Abraham and one other person. Matthew was not at the apartment.
A search of the premises yielded 17 vials containing what appeared to be marijuana in a bedroom. Officers also found a Glock 27 handgun loaded with eight live rounds of ammunition.
A box of .40-caliber Smith & Wesson ammunition was found on the top shelf of the bedroom closet.
Abraham reportedly told officers that the handgun belonged to him but denied owning the other items recovered from the apartment.
Police found no record indicating that he had been issued a Virgin Islands license to possess a firearm or ammunition.
Abraham was arrested and charged with unauthorized possession of a firearm and possession of ammunition.
Unable to satisfy the initial $50,000 bail requirement, he was remanded into custody pending an advice-of-rights hearing.
During Tuesday’s proceeding, Magistrate Christopher Timmons found probable cause to uphold both charges.
The court allowed Abraham to secure his release by posting 10 percent of the $50,000 bail in cash, with the remaining amount signed as an unsecured bond.
His next court appearance is scheduled for August 5.
