ST. THOMAS — A man is facing criminal charges after allegedly strangling his girlfriend before leaving with her cellphone and house keys.
Just after 11:00 p.m. on Friday, April 21st, a crime scene technician told Central Dispatch that they were being flagged down by a woman in reference to what appeared to be a domestic dispute unfolding near the police station. The technician had observed a man leaving a vehicle and heading east on Veterans Drive with a plastic bag in hand. The woman who sought assistance told the technician that her boyfriend, Kadeem Jackson, had taken her house keys and her cell phone, and left.
The technician alerted police inside the Richard Callwood Command Police Station, who tracked Jackson to a location on Veteran’s Drive, whereupon he was detained.
An officer found his girlfriend, who explained that they were out in the town when he stepped out of the vehicle to make a phone call. The woman said that she saw him speaking with his friends, and further suggested that at that point, he was already in a bad mood due to a prior family dispute. While Jackson was out of the vehicle conversing, she said that the vehicle’s gas light came on, so she went to the nearest gas station but could not tell Jackson that she was leaving because she did not have a working cell phone.
When she returned, the woman said she saw her boyfriend shouting in the middle of the roadway. She rolled down her window and discovered that he was upset because she had left without informing him. Jackson then got into the passenger seat and demanded to be taken home. According to the victim, he became so irate that he grabbed the key, asking “why the [expletive] did you leave me?” She told police that she subsequently pulled into a parking lot and told her boyfriend “please stop yelling and disrespecting me or you would have to get out of my vehicle.”
Her boyfriend returned the key and they continued their drive home, but an argument broke out again and she stopped the vehicle. A patrol officer stopped and asked if everything was okay, to which both Jackson and his girlfriend replied that everything was fine. The officer then left the area and according to the woman, that’s when Jackson grabbed her belongings, assaulting and threatening her in the process. Prior to leaving, the woman alleged that “he began to strangle me by grabbing my throat with one hand and with his fingers wrapped around my neck”. While doing so, Jackson allegedly started making threats to "shoot up" certain individuals, among other concerning remarks.
Jackson then took her keys a second time, causing her to turn around and drive towards the police station for assistance. While in the area of the police station parking lot, she demanded her keys and Jackson dropped them after he observed a police officer walking towards the vehicle, according to the probable cause fact sheet. He then took off towards the area of the Federal Building. During her report, the woman claimed that this is not the first time that her boyfriend has made such threats. She told police that she is tired of Jackson assaulting her and it must stop. Police did not notice any visible injuries, nor did the woman did not allow the crime scene technician to take photographs for documentation. However, Jackson was found in possession of the woman’s phone, which was ultimately returned to her.
Kadeem Jackson was arrested and charged with second-degree assault as a crime of violence and disturbance of the peace. Court records indicate that he was offered pre-trial release by the presiding judge, the details of which were not available.
