Bales of cocaine confiscated in Frederiksted during the early morning hours of Monday, Feb. 12, 2024.

ST. CROIX — Several people have reportedly been held after they were spotted collecting suspicious packages that had been left near a beach on the southwest coast of St. Croix Monday morning.

Reports indicate that several law enforcement agencies including the VIPD and the Coast Guard were involved in the operation.

At least one person has reportedly been detained as a result of the operation.

The VIPD has confirmed that an operation is underway, however further details have not been forthcoming. The Consortium has received video showing a marked VIPD vehicle pulling a blue and white small boat out of the water. The boat appears to be loaded with several blue barrels, the contents of which are currently unknown.

A police source with knowledge of the operation told the Consortium that the boat seen in the video was indeed confiscated, and narcotics reportedly discovered on board.  Dozens of cocaine bales were confiscated, according to law enforcement.

The Department of Homeland Security has now assumed responsibility for investigating the matter.

This is a developing story; updates will be posted as they are received.
