A gunman killed eight people and wounded several others at a FedEx Corp. facility in Indianapolis before turning a gun on himself, said the city's police.

Police responded to reports of gunfire just after 11:00 p.m. local time Thursday at the facility, located near the Indianapolis airport, only to encounter a shooting in progress, said Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department spokeswoman Genae Cook at a news conference.

At least four individuals were taken to hospitals with one said to be in critical condition.

FedEx issued a statement expressing shock and sadness. The Indianapolis facility employs about 4,500 and is FedEx's second largest global HUB, according to the Indianapolis Star newspaper (via the Wall Street Journal).

"We are deeply shocked and saddened by the loss of our team members following the tragic shooting at our FedEx Ground facility in Indianapolis," said FedEx in a statement. “Our most heartfelt sympathies are with all those affected by this senseless act of violence. The safety of our team members is our top priority, and we are fully cooperating with investigating authorities.”

Police directed people who work at the facility or those searching for family members to gather at a hotel, rather than going to the shooting scene, reported WSJ.
