ST. THOMAS — Bystanders and the manager of a gas station in St. Thomas restrained an employee until police arrived on the scene after the employee attempted to steal money from the gas station's cash register, V.I.P.D. Public Information Officer Toby Derima has announced.
On Saturday around 1:20 p.m., police arrested Wesly Jean, age 27 of Anna’s Retreat, and charged him with embezzlement, Mr. Derima said.
The manager of the Racetrack gas station on Weymouth Rhymer Highway observed Jean, an employee, take cash from the register, according to police. When the manager confronted Jean, he attempted to flee, but was apprehended by the manager and bystanders, then detained until officers’ arrival. The manager stated as Jean attempted to flee, a gun fell from his person, which was later identified as a pellet gun.
Jean admitted to removing cash from the register and was placed under arrest. His bail was set at $35,000, which he was unable to post. He was subsequently turned over to the custody of the Bureau of Corrections pending advisement hearing.
