ST. CROIX — A suspect linked to a double homicide in the Aureo Diaz Housing Community in 2021 has been extradited to St. Croix to face charges related to the incident, the V.I. Police Department has announced.
On April 19, 2021, at approximately 7:46 p.m., the 911 Emergency Call Center received multiple reports of gunshots in the Aureo Diaz Housing Community, according to the VIPD. Responding officers discovered four individuals injured at the scene, including Michael Ramos, 33, and Juan Velasquez, 38. Both men succumbed to their injuries after being transported to the Juan F. Luis Hospital.
Following the fatal shooting, law enforcement detectives conducted an operation within Aureo Diaz, leading to the arrests of Luis Rivera, Jameel Williams, Guillermo Rivera, and Gilberto Rivera. However, one suspect, Justine Nisbett, managed to evade capture for over two years.
Acting on received intelligence, the U.S. Marshal Taskforce successfully apprehended Nisbett in Henry County, Georgia, on November 27, 2023. Without incident, Nisbett signed a waiver of extradition, clearing the way for his return to St. Croix. On December 15, 2023, he was transported back to the island, where he underwent processing, booking, and was subsequently detained at the John Bell Correctional Facility. Nisbett's advise of rights hearing is scheduled for Monday, December 18, 2023.
