ST. CROIX — A former Home Depot employee has been arrested on multiple felony charges after police said she admitted to stealing thousands of dollars while working as a cashier at the store’s St. Croix location.

According to the V.I. Police Department’s Economic Crimes Unit, an investigation began on September 20, 2025, after the company filed an embezzlement complaint. Investigators determined that Melina Figueroa, while employed at Home Depot, had “knowingly and fraudulently embezzled funds on several occasions.”

Surveillance footage reportedly showed Figueroa removing cash from her register and placing it in her pocket. When questioned by store management, she allegedly confessed to the theft, telling investigators she had taken approximately $5,000.

Following the investigation, an arrest warrant was issued for Figueroa. On October 23, 2025, at around 10:23 a.m., she surrendered at the Wilbur H. Francis Command Police Station, where she was advised of her rights, served with the warrant, and taken into custody without incident.

Figueroa was booked and charged with embezzlement by employee, obtaining money by false pretense, grand larceny, and access to a computer for fraudulent purposes.

Police set her bail at $35,000, but she was permitted to post 10 percent, or $3,500, which she did later that day. She was subsequently released on her own recognizance pending her Advice of Rights hearing, scheduled for Friday, October 24, 2025, in the Superior Court of the Virgin Islands.

The case was handled by its Economic Crimes Unit as part of ongoing efforts to investigate and prosecute financial crimes within the territory.
