ST. THOMAS- A man has been charged after he allegedly attempted to flee the scene of a vehicular accident.
Trey Reynolds was arrested on Thursday night and charged with driving under the influence of alcohol and driving with an illegal blood alcohol content.
The probable cause fact sheet states that police were dispatched to Norre Gade and Hospital Gade intersection in reference to an auto collision. The responding officers made contact with a detective who stated that Trey Reynolds was involved in an auto collision and began to run westward on the same roadway. Reynolds was later frisked, handcuffed and placed in the back of a police vehicle. Officers noted that they smelled alcohol on his breath. Although Reynolds reportedly denied consuming alcohol prior to operating his vehicle, officers observed that his speech was slurred and his eyes were bloodshot. After being transported to the Traffic Investigations Bureau, Reynolds registered a blood alcohol content of 0.138, which is above the legal limit of 0.08.
During investigations, police made contact with a witness who stated that they heard a noise and observed a white truck and a jeep involved in an auto collision where the jeep was badly damaged. The witness further told police that they saw a Caucasian man start to run westward. Investigations also revealed that the other driver was traveling westward on Norre Gade in the area of Moravia School and Trey Reynolds was traveling southward on Hospital Gade in the area of Franklin Roosevelt Park. According to the fact sheet, while traveling Reynolds’ lights changed to yellow when entering the intersection and the front of his vehicle collided with the front right portion of the other vehicle, causing it to veer left onto Hospital Gade roadway where it came to a stop. The fact sheet describes the result of the collision as having “disabling damages and injuries”.
Following his arrest on Thursday, Reynolds was released on the posting of $1000 bail. At his advisement hearing on Friday, Assistant V.I. Attorney General Brenda Scales stated that she was satisfied with the bail as previously set. However, she requested that Reynolds surrender his driver's license to the court. Scales indicated that the Florida-born defendant had no prior arrests in the Virgin Islands or mainland USA.
Meanwhile, attorney Andy Johnson requested that if any travel restrictions are imposed on the defendant, bail should be set as an unsecured bond and that the previously posted sum should be returned. Johnson further asked that Reynolds be permitted to turn over his license at his March 11th arraignment. According to the Attorney, the defendant needs his license to help him maintain his job, at least for now.
Judge Paula Norkaitis maintained bail at $1000, noting that there is a risk of flight, given that the probable cause fact sheet indicates that Reynolds attempted to flee the accident scene. Reynolds must therefore surrender his passport and passport card to the court by end of business on Friday. However, he will be allowed to surrender his license on his scheduled arraignment date.
