ST. CROIX — A violent altercation in Estate Strawberry on December 1 resulted in one man dead and another injured in what appears to be a case of self-defense, the V.I. Police Department announced Sunday night.
The incident, which occurred at around 10:22 p.m., was initially reported through Shot Spotter alerts of shots fired and subsequent calls to 911 about a shooting victim.
According to police, units were dispatched to Sunny Acres following the reports. One victim was transported to the Juan F. Luis Hospital in a private vehicle. Simultaneously, a gunshot victim, later identified as 21-year-old Kjani Skeet, sought assistance in a nearby yard and was taken to the hospital by ambulance.
According to the police report, while at the hospital, detectives interviewed the first victim, an adult male. He recounted that during his visit to a female friend's residence in Estate Strawberry, her child's father arrived unexpectedly. To provide privacy for the father and his child, the victim and his female friend continued their conversation in his car. The situation turned violent when the child’s father, upset that the mother did not attend to the baby as he requested, confronted her verbally. He then approached the victim's car, opened the driver's side door, and began stabbing the male visitor multiple times with a knife.
In response, the victim, who had multiple stab wounds to his hands, torso, and head, drew his licensed firearm and discharged shots to stop the attack. He was treated at the hospital for his injuries and subsequently released.
Kjani Skeet, the aggressor in the incident, underwent emergency surgery but ultimately succumbed to his gunshot injuries, according to police.
