ST. CROIX — A man who reportedly barged into a house uninvited and snatched a chain from his ex-girlfriend's neck is now facing a slew of felony charges in court.
According to court documents, the woman called the 911 Emergency Call Center last Tuesday night, reporting that Nahjeed Acevedo, her child's father, stole her chain. Just after midnight on Wednesday morning, she came to the Wilbur H. Francis Command police station to provide a statement.
She told police that she was staying at a friend's house in Estate Whim and was home with three other female friends, when they heard someone knocking at the door. One of them opened the door to find Acevedo. The woman said that she was surprised to see him, as he was not invited and she didn't realize he even knew where she was. He reportedly walked up to a bed in the living room where his ex-girlfriend was sitting with her 6-month old baby in her arms, and grabbed the gold chain that was around her neck.
Acevedo reportedly started pulling on the chain, trying to rip it off his ex-girlfriend's neck. She told officers that his elbow hit her baby in the head, and she began trying to fight him off, screaming for help. One of her friends took the baby and shouted at Acevedo to stop, but he continued tugging at the chain around her neck. The woman said he punched her in the face and continued yanking on the chain as she fell to the floor. Eventually, he was able to rip the chain away, and made his escape on a bicycle, heading southwards. Two of the woman's friends pursued him back to his residence and retrieved the chain.
The woman's friends told police that when Acevedo first entered the home and approached his ex, they initially thought that he was trying to kiss her. It was only when the commotion began that they realized he was actually trying to rip the chain off the woman's neck. The women who had chased Acevedo back to his parents' house said that when they arrived, he was sitting in a vehicle with two women, one of whom threw the chain in question towards the two friends, who then returned to find their injured friend speaking with police.
Investigating officers who arrived on scene observed injuries on the woman including a burst lip, bruises on her left arm, and scratches on her knuckle. She complained of pain in her neck. Her baby had a scratch on the forehead and red discoloration in that area.
Acevedo was arrested and charged with aggravated assault, simple assault, and destruction of property as acts of domestic violence. He was also charged with first-degree assault, grand larceny, second degree robbery, child abuse and disturbing the peace by fighting.
Court documents indicate that by the time Acevedo appeared in court on Friday, the child abuse and simple assault charges had been dropped. However, Magistrate Ernest Morris Jr. found probable cause to uphold the other six charges against him, and imposed bail in the sum of $1000.
The next court appearance for Acevedo is scheduled for January 3, 2024.
