ST. CROIX — Tragedy struck the Golden Rock area late Saturday night, as shots rang out at the G-Max Service Station.
At approximately 11:54 p.m., the 911 Emergency Call Center was alerted to the sound of gunfire in the vicinity of the service station by the Shotspotter system. Shortly after the alert, a call came in about a potential gunshot victim at the said location.
Police officers arriving on the scene made a grim discovery. They found the body of a black male who appeared unresponsive. Despite attempts to revive him, the victim was pronounced dead just past midnight by EMS personnel.
Preliminary examinations suggest the victim, who was later identified as 33-year-old Steadroy James by his father, succumbed to multiple gunshot wounds. Forensics teams processed the scene early Saturday morning.
In a linked incident, while additional police units were en route to the G-Max Service Station, the 911 Emergency Call Center reported another gunshot victim near JFK. Units responded promptly, securing the scene, where they also discovered a firearm. This victim, who suffered gunshot wounds to the stomach and arm, was rushed to the Juan F. Luis Hospital by ambulance. According to police, this victim was in the same vehicle as Mr. James.
The V.I. Department of Justice has since taken custody of Mr. James's remains, and an autopsy is pending. The motive for the shooting remains unclear, and local authorities are urging anyone with information to come forward as they continue to investigate this incident.
