ST. CROIX — A man working road construction on Carlton Road in Frederiksted, where the Dept. of Public Works has been performing major, long overdue repairs, was shot dead Tuesday morning by multiple assailants who fled the scene in a late model silver SUV, St. Croix Deputy Police Chief Sean Santos confirmed to the Consortium.

Police were on the scene soon after receiving notification, and were told by witnesses that the suspects escaped in a silver, recently manufactured SUV. The V.I.P.D. is asking the community to call 911 and immediately report any suspicious-looking activity involving a silver SUV.

The 911 received notification of the Carlton Road shooting at about 10:58 a.m. Tuesday. Officers traveled to the scene and were told by witnesses that the road construction worker was shot multiple times about the body by assailants who fled the scene heading south to the Melvin Evans Highway.

The victim has been identified by next of kin as Victor Burgos, age 42.

Dep. Chief Santos said the suspects were both wearing masks and therefore their facial features could not be determined. He said officers were stopping SUVs that meet the description as the police department tries new ways to quell crime in the community.

The territory's homicide count for 2021 as of Tuesday was thirty-one: 24 on St. Croix, 6 on St. Thomas, and 1 on St. John.

Persons with information about the homicide or silver SUV may also contact Crime Stoppers USVI with an anonymous tip here, or the V.I.P.D.'s Crime TipLine at (340) 778-4950
