ST. CROIX — Two robberies occurred tonight in Sunny Isle, the first at the shoe and apparel store, Champs, and the other at the recently opened Pizza Hut.
That's according to V.I.P.D. Public Information Officer Toby Derima, who confirmed that the Champs incident occurred at about 6:38 p.m., while the Pizza Hut robbery took place at around 9:04 p.m.
According to a police source, at least one suspect placed a gun at a Champs manager's head and demanded that he be given the funds from the cash register. An undisclosed amount of cash was stolen from the register.
A similar scenario played out at Pizza Hut, according to the police source. A male suspect pointed a gun at a manager and demanded that monies in the cash register be given to him.
According to police, it is possible that the individual who robbed the Champs store may be the same suspect responsible for the incident at Pizza Hut. It may also be a coincident that the robberies occurred in such close proximity and mere hours apart.
The Pizza Hut in Sunny Isle, which is in the same facility as Kentucky Fried Chicken, opened recently. Originally, the building only housed KFC, but after being destroyed by Hurricane Maria in 2017, it was retrofitted with the two fast-food restaurants.
Mr. Derima said V.I.P.D. detectives were still investigating the incidents.
The V.I.P.D. is asking anyone with information about the robberies to send an anonymous tip to Crime Stoppers here.
