ST. CROIX — U.S. Attorney for the Virgin Islands, Delia L. Smith announced Thursday that 45-year-old Jason Lee Current was sentenced to 12 years in prison by District Judge Wilma A. Lewis for his conviction of conspiracy to possess with intent to distribute methamphetamine.
Current, classified as a career offender, will also face five years of supervised release, a $2,500 fine, and a $100 special assessment.
Court documents reveal that on November 5, 2020, Customs and Border Protection in San Juan, Puerto Rico, intercepted a package sent from California to Current, containing 112 grams of methamphetamine and 341 grams of marijuana. The drugs were replaced with sham substances and a tracking device was added. Current collected the package from the Sunny Isle Post Office in St. Croix on November 10, 2020, but attempted to evade capture after discovering the tracking device. He was eventually apprehended.
In July 2020, Current fled from Hawaii to avoid sentencing for felony robbery and assault convictions.
The case was investigated by Homeland Security Investigations, Customs and Border Protection, U.S. Postal Inspection Services, and the Drug Enforcement Administration. Assistant U.S. Attorney Daniel H. Huston prosecuted the case.
