TORTOLA, BVI — The British Virgin Islands has recorded its first homicide of the year, according to the British territory's police department. The victim was shot in his home at about 9:30 p.m. on Wednesday and has since been identified as George Borrows.

Borrows, a father of  four, was allegedly shot by an unknown assailant who fled on foot, said the police department. Authorities called on the community to provide information to law enforcement by calling Detective Inspector Vernon Larocque directly at 368-9809, or via the Major Crime Investigation Team at 368-5682.

"All information will be treated with discretion and confidentiality will be assured," said the police force, officially named The Royal Virgin Islands Police Force.

The BVI is currently under a Covid-19-induced curfew, and the incident happened after curfew hours.

In a story posted on BVI News, Borrows was said to be a devoted and loving man whose death will leave a lasting impact. Members of Tortola's Sixth District Community, in which Borrows resided, took to social media to express their shock as well as condolences.

District Representative Alvera Maduro-Caines said the British territory should not be forced to deal with gun violence while grappling with a pandemic. “This is not what I expected tonight (Wednesday). It is not what I expect to hear on any night. It’s not what I expect to hear in my community. It is not what I expect to hear in our territory. As we fight one plague, violence should not plague us as well,” he said, according to BVI News.
