Attempted Robbery During VI-PR Celebrations Leaves One Man Nursing Gunshot Wound to Hip; Police Investigating

ST. CROIX — Just after midnight on Monday morning, the 911 Emergency Call Center received reports of shots fired near the Rudolph Schulterbrandt Agricultural Complex, where the VI-Puerto Rico Friendship Day celebrations were being held.

Responding officers were notified that an injured party had been taken to hospital by private vehicle. When they arrived at the medical facility, they found a man who was being treated for a gunshot wound to his right hip. While police were at the hospital, another man came in with a gunshot injury to his foot. He told officers that he had been walking to where his vehicle was parked on the eastern end of the Agricultural Complex when he was hit by a bullet, which passed through his leg and exited his heel.

Police learned that the first man had been standing by his vehicle with his girlfriend and infant child when they were accosted at gunpoint by a man in a red mask who demanded they turn over their belongings.

The man punched the would-be robber, causing him to fall to the ground. However, the assailant then pointed a gun and fired a single shot at his target, striking the man in the hip area. As the thwarted mugger fled the scene, he fired another shot.

The Criminal Investigation Bureau is continuing its probe into the incident. Police are asking anyone with information about this incident to call 911, the CIB Tipline (340-778-4950) or submit a tip to Crime Stoppers VI.
