ST. CROIX — V.I.P.D. officers on Friday rearrested Calijah Brewley and Jiovoni Smith, both age 21, officially upgrading their charges from first-degree attempted murder to first-degree murder, announced police spokesman Toby Derima.
The men, who were in the custody of the Bureau of Corrections since being initially arrested on May 15, 2020, were charged in the shooting incident in Estate Paradise earlier that day that eventually claimed the life of 19-year-old Selena Chitolie.
Ms. Chitolie, her mother and younger brother were driving in Estate Paradise in the vicinity of the abandoned Evelyn Williams Elementary School during the afternoon time of May 15, 2020 and were said to be looking for an apartment to rent when they were shot at by at least three assailants who investigators believe took a preemptive strike at a vehicle they thought had occupants looking to harm them.
Unable to make bail of $500,000 each, both men were remanded to the Golden Grove Correctional Facility pending their advisement hearing.
