ST. CROIX — A 36-year-old man was pronounced dead Sunday by emergency responders after he was found unresponsive and trapped in a vehicle that crashed into a tree in the vicinity of the Canebrake Apartments, the V.I. Police Department has announced.

According to V.I.P.D. Director of Communications Glen Dratte, today at approximately 01:10 a.m., a concerned resident reported to the 911 Emergency Call Center that an auto accident had taken place on Emancipation Drive in the vicinity of Canebrake Apartments. The resident further stated that the male victim was trapped inside the vehicle.

A 911 dispatcher notified first responder agencies — the V.I.P.D., St. Croix Rescue and V.I. Fire and EMS, and they immediately made their way to the scene.

A preliminary investigation revealed that the vehicle, a blue 2007 Acura TSX bearing license plate number CGP-402, was traveling from north to south on Emancipation Drive. While approaching the Canebrake Apartments, the driver lost control of the vehicle, veered off the road and ended on the eastern shoulder of the housing community where the vehicle collided into a tree and the fence of Canebrake Apartments.

The crash's impact thrust the vehicle to the western side of Building 9, the V.I.P.D. said. The tree that was struck by the vehicle was located approximately 29 feet, 8 inches east of the eastern edge of the road, police said.

The deceased was identified by next of kin as 36-year-old Juan Nales Jr.

Nales was pronounced dead by emergency medical technicians at 1:27 a.m., according to the V.I.P.D.
