15-Year-Old is Said to Have Accidentally Shot Himself Near Festival Village on St. Croix

ST. CROIX — A 15-year old male was wounded from a gunshot early Tuesday morning near the Crucian Christmas Festival Village in Frederiksted, V.I.P.D. Public Information Officer Toby Derima has announced.

At approximately 3:17 a.m., V.I.P.D. officers responded to the playground area adjacent to the Festival Village after a concerned citizen reported that a person was wounded by a gunshot.

Upon arrival at the Midre Cummings Park, officers found the victim with a gunshot wound to the leg. Emergency Medical Services personnel stationed at the Village were summoned to treat the injury, and the victim was transported to the Juan F. Luis Hospital & Medical Center for further treatment, Mr. Derima said.

Detectives are investigating witness statements that this incident may be a result of a self-inflicted injury.
