Governor Bryan updated the residents of the Virgin Islands on Covid-19 in the territory during a press briefing on Wednesday. The Governor mentioned in his report that besides providing more safe social outlets for the people of the community, boating and unruly tourist had become areas of concern in the territory.
While the Bryan administration has put in place robust protocols for land-based activities, many residents have gravitated to the seas. The Governor said, “I want you to know that it is just as easy to catch the Covid during a mass gathering with people on a boat as it is onshore.” Governor Bryan expressed that he discourages individuals from attending parties and other gatherings at sea. The Governor added that while boating is allowable and permissible under the safe social distancing and practicing keeping away from people, he strongly advises individuals to wear their mask when it makes sense to do so.
Governor Bryan stated that many of the incidents the Administration has seen consist of the rafting of vessels. The Governor firmly expressed that vessel rafting is strictly prohibited under the 12th Executive Oder issued by his Administration and is also subject to a penalty of $10,000 fine per incident and/ or confiscation of the vessel. Furthermore, the Governor articulated that they have been having a tremendously difficult time with visitors getting intoxicated and resisting the mandate to wear a mask. He added that they are finding difficulty with travelers coming back from St. John, especially on a Friday and Saturday night. The Governor further stated that he would be assigning extra police and enforcement officials and detain and lock up anyone who doesn’t follow the rules; “please, if you’re going to visit the Virgin Islands conform to all of our protocols,” said Governor Bryan.
