It started as a simple idea, as Mic Love, a well-known USVI Soca Artist, wondered to himself whether the Whole World Challenge — which he saw on film maker and entrepreneur, Tyler Perry's Facebook page — would catch on in the territory like it did on the mainland.
He went with his gut and set the criteria low: "You don't even have to know how to sing," Mic Love said in a video igniting the challenge on Facebook. "You just have to have the confidence."
He called out a number of recognizable singers in the USVI to join the challenge in an effort to give it legs, and, started it with his own rendition.
The rest is history.
Singers and amateurs — even the Dept. of Education — took to Facebook to offer their versions. Before you knew it, timelines of Virgin Islanders were flooded with renditions of "He's Got the Whole World in his Hands", a Christian song speaking about the ability of God to get people through difficult times such as the one the world has found itself in with the novel coronavirus. The deadly pathogen has wreaked havoc the world over, devastating economies and cutting short 95,777 lives as of Friday morning, while sickening 1,603,330, according to John Hopkins University data.
In a telephone interview with the Consortium, Mic Love said he wanted to inject hope into the lives of Virgin Islanders as anxiety and fear could easily take hold in such times.
"With what's going on right now, we need something positive down the [Facebook] timeline instead of just seeing coronavirus all the time. So I figured I would take our minds off of all the negativity we're seeing online at least for a moment," Mic Love said.
