Governor Albert Bryan has consistently stressed during recent press briefings about the coronavirus pandemic that the annual flu kills thousands of people every year, in an effort to convey that while the new coronavirus is bad, people should not be too worried. Just yesterday, on the "Just Jamilla" radio show with host Jamilla Russell, he again said, "
I am not a newsy. Being in the news everyday I don't trust too much the media to report the story in a way that's accurate. I mean, they've reported the story in a way that's interesting, and that's two very different perspectives.
There hasn't been a lot of information about that because I guess the news doesn't want people to understand this is treated much like how you would treat the flu. It's a virus.
The governor said he remember taking one of his daughter, at a younger age to a doctor, who would say, "It's a virus, it's a virus. Waiting out it will go away. And last night I was having dinner with one of my favorite doctor friends, and he said if you take a handful of seawater, there are more viruses in there than you would believe. There are viruses that live in and among us all the time...
But this particular virus has jumped across from animals into people, and we just don't know how it will affect. And just like mango sweet to some people, some people break out in a rash if they smell mango. So we don't know how different people react to the virus. So, you know I have people coming up to me now saying, 'well maybe this thing was hear from before and we didn't even know. People just weren't exhibiting [symptoms]. I said, maybe.
The governor said the only thing that worries him is how fast the virus has spread in the elderly. And one of the things I think is contributing to that is culture again. We have a kissy culture. We have a "huggy" culture. It's much more easier for viruses to spread and we are very warm community.... We just have to stop that.
"This is a flu that has some devastating effects on particularly the elderly, particular groups of people — just like any other flu. But the one thing with this is we don't know what's going to happen. We don't know when it's to stop.

The difference about this one is our media is way way more tense that it ever was. I mean being governor in a time of social media and the internet just a proliferation of all kinds of sources of information, is good and is bad.
