Senator-at-Large Steven Payne Sr. said in a release Monday that he found out early last week of his positive Covid-19 infection after traveling across the territory "in a flurry of legislative activity."
“I was infected by someone I trusted to share information regarding their close contact with someone they had been taking care of who tested positive," he said. According to the release, Mr. Payne said he would like everyone to truly understand that the coronavirus is not something to play around with or to be taken lightly.
"Towards the end of last week, his condition was such that he was low on oxygen, so he was briefly hospitalized at Roy Schneider Regional Medical Center in St. Thomas before being released over the weekend," reads the release.
Mr. Payne is said to be at his home resting and following quarantine protocols until the virus leaves his system in the form of a negative Covid-19 test.
“Thank you to all who have been asking and offering up prayers and support, they are greatly appreciated,” he said.
Legislative hearings were canceled last week because of the exposure.
