ST. CROIX —The Dept. of Property and Procurement on St. Croix closed its physical location and initiated full work-from-home protocols after an employee tested positive over the weekend, according to people with knowledge of the matter, speaking to the Consortium on the condition of anonymity.
P&P Commissioner Anthony Thomas acknowledged that an employee of the department on St. Croix tested positive for the virus, and said that steps have been taken to mitigate impact.
Mr. Thomas said most of the department's employees have been working remotely and on modified schedules since the pandemic started.
"I have closed down the main office in Richmond and all employees having close contact with the employee testing positive have been told to quarantine," the commissioner said. "We are working with the health department to get each employee tested and having the entire campus cleaned and sanitized."
In recent times, a growing number of government departments and agencies have been affected by Covid-19, among them the V.I. Dept. of Health, the Superior Court, the Election System of the Virgin Islands, among others.
Property and Procurement is one of the government's most important arms. According to a description on its website, P&P provides assistance to government departments and agencies in their efforts to acquire goods and services.
