The V.I. Dept. of Health reported over 300 active Covid-19 cases Tuesday evening, a number that represents 71 new infections from the previous day's 232. The surge comes as D.O.H. has been performing mass testing of public school students and staff in a move aimed at containing any potential surge on campuses. However, the new data is a positive sign as it represents less cases than the 345 active infections reported last week by the department.
According to D.O.H.'s latest data, there were 303 active cases territory-wide Tuesday, 135 on St. Croix, 162 on St. Thomas and 6 on St. John. The territory's positivity rate stood at 7.92 percent as of Tuesday.
Meanwhile, the V.I. Dept. of Education has decided to resume in-person learning on St. Croix after approving remote instruction on Tuesday. Students are to report to their physical classrooms on St. Croix on Wednesday, May 4 if they've received their Covid-19 test result from D.O.H. and that result is negative.
On St. Thomas, students will continue learning virtually for the remainder of the week and are to resume in-person learning on Monday, May 9, according to D.O.E.
