Local health officials confirmed the 42nd Covid-related death in the U.S. Virgin Islands Wednesday morning, keeping front of mind the ongoing impact the pandemic continues to have on the territory.
According to the V.I. Dept. of Health, the latest death was a St. John resident 62 years of age.
"After further investigating cause of death and ensuring notification of next of kin, the Virgin Islands Department of Health is saddened to confirm the territory’s forty-second death related to Covid-19. The deceased is a 62-year-old female on St. John," D.O.H. made known Wednesday.
The territory reported 305 Covid-19 cases Monday, down from 401 last week, providing an encouraging anecdotal sign that the Delta variant's spread may be leveling off, though it is too early to say for certain.
On Sunday, Governor Albert Bryan told the Consortium that vaccination against Covid-19 saw a sharp increase last week, a sign that the Delta variant-induced surge in active infections and rising Covid-related deaths in the territory were pushing Virgin Islanders to get vaccinated against the virus.
According to the governor, over 1,200 Virgin Islanders got vaccinated against Covid-19 last week. "It looks like we're going to keep that trend for a while," he said.
