First 'Vax to Win' Lottery Announcement Scheduled for July 19, Residents Encouraged to Bump Up Vaccination Numbers

The first of ten consecutive weekly drawings for the "Vax to Win USVI" general vaccine lottery began on Friday, July 9. The winners for that first drawing will be announced on Monday, July 19, according to Gov't House.

It takes ten days before announcing the winners as the V.I. Dept. of Health has to verify the winners’ vaccination record, verify USVI residency, and receive consent to share vaccination statuses with the public, said Richard Motta, the Bryan administration's communications director, speaking at the governor’s weekly press briefing Monday afternoon.

Mr. Motta stated that two vaccinated Virgin Islanders will soon receive their prize of either $100,000 or $50,000. Fully vaccinated individuals are eligible to receive $100,000. If only the first shot was received, they are in the running to receive $50,000, an expanded eligibility provided by the administration.

To enter the vaccine lottery drawing, call the VITEMA hotline at (340)777-8227 or register here.

The current stats for COVID-19 vaccinations are as follows:

  • First Dose: 45,206 people (or 56.9% of eligible population who can be vaccinated)
  • Fully Vaccinated: 37,466 people (or 47.2% of eligible population who can be vaccinated)

“To reach community immunity, we have to bump it up another thirty percent,” said Ms. Encarnacion at the press conference.

Correction: July 13, 2021

A previous version of this story stated that the lottery winners would be revealed on July 16, which was based on what Mr. Motta said during the administration's weekly press briefing Monday afternoon. However, Mr. Motta reached out to say that he made an error and that the date of announcement is July 19. We've updated the story to reflect the correct information.
