The V.I. Dept. of Health on Thursday announced the 27th Covid-19 related death in the U.S. Virgin Islands, with the latest victim being a St. Thomas resident.

According to a D.O.H. release, the victim, a man, was 81 years old. "After further investigating cause of death and ensuring notification of next of kin, the Virgin Islands Department of Health is saddened to confirm the territory’s twenty-seventh death related to Covid-19. The deceased is an 81-year old male on St. Thomas," the department said.

Less than a month ago, D.O.H. said a 55-year-old woman from St. Croix was the territory's 26th person to die from Covid-related causes in the territory.

D.O.H. urged Virgin Islanders to continue to follow Covid-19 protocols as it works to slow the spread of the disease.

The territory had 62 active cases as of Thursday, with St. Croix accounting for thirty-one cases, followed by St. Thomas with twenty-nine and St. John with two. D.O.H. data says 2,934 people have recovered from the virus, with a total of 93,610 tests performed.

The territory's 27 Covid-19 deaths breakdown is as follows: 16 on St. Thomas, 10 on St. Croix and 1 on St. John.
