A 70-year-old woman is the 57th person in the U.S. Virgin Islands to die of Covid-19 related causes, announced the V.I. Dept. of Health Wednesday.

"After further investigating cause of death and ensuring notification of next of kin, the Virgin Islands Department of Health is saddened to confirm the territory’s fifty-seventh death related to COVID-19. The deceased is a 70-year-old female on St. Thomas," D.O.H. said.

As of Tuesday there were 212 active cases territory-wide, 103 on St. Thomas, 102 on St. Croix and 7 on St. John.

St. Thomas is leading Covid-related deaths by a wide margin: 35 compared to St. Croix's 18, while St. John has recorded two deaths.

Governor Bryan, speaking during his weekly Covid-19 press briefing Monday, shared condolences and prayers for grieving families. He also prayed for frontline workers. "Our heartfelt condolences go out to the loved ones of that young lady and all others who have suffered as a result of coronavirus," he said. "I pray for God's grace and mercy for our residents fighting their best against the virus in our hospitals. I pray for God's protection over our doctors and nurses and health care workers who tirelessly and selflessly work around the clock to provide these treatments that save as many lives as possible."
