During times of crises, the U.S. has historically turned to faith for comfort, strength and reassurance that though the times may be uncertain and difficult, a constant source of hope for a brighter tomorrow has been God. Governor Albert Bryan has not strayed from this strategy, and on Monday unified an array of faith leaders for an event called "Virgin Islands Day of Prayer and Fasting".

Held at Government House on St. Croix, Mr. Bryan and his wife, Yolanda, opened up the spiritual gathering with remarks that set the stage for prayers from a diverse group of religious leaders — from members of the Christian faith to leaders of the Muslim and Rastafarian belief systems.

The 1-hour affair united listeners from the airwaves to the internet, with over 24,000 people having watched on VI Consortium as of Tuesday morning.

"This is a troubling time in our world and indeed a troubling time in our territory. But in all the troubles we have seen together, we have always known that there is a great father above that guides our every move, and every single day we ask him for guidance in getting through the simple things," Governor Bryan said.

The coronavirus, also called Covid-19 (Coronavirus Disease 2019), has seen 30 confirmed cases in the U.S. Virgin Islands, with 24 cases pending as of Monday. Health officials expect the number to increase rapidly as testing ramp up in the coming weeks.

Mr. Bryan, coming to terms with the gravity of the problem, whose economic toll could send the U.S. economy spiraling into a depression, turned to the heavens for supernatural help. He also said the event should be used as a time of reflection.

"Now we have a great task before us. A task of getting our people through this horrific worldwide pandemic. But we trust and we have faith that he is with us and he walks with us. And this is a time that he has set aside for us to look at what we're doing; look at the lives we're leading. Look at our neighbor, our community, our children and find time to reflect on how we can do and what we can do to make life a little better," the governor said.
