Governor Albert Bryan has announced the issuance of $20 million in tax refunds, a move he said keeps in line with his administration's promise to pay Virgin Islanders monies owed to them by the government.
The $20 million, set to go out this week, brings the administration's total refund payments to $58 million for the current fiscal year, the governor said.
Mr. Bryan spoke of the impact Covid-19 continues to have on the community, including the most financially vulnerable. He said the administration implemented belt-tightening measures to make the payments possible.
"As we send this money out there's also a message to the public: we are committed to your wellbeing and your health through this pandemic," Mr. Bryan said. "But we're also committed to making sure that every Virgin Islands family has food on the table."
The governor later told the Consortium that the $20 million would close out 2017 refunds and pay some of 2018's.
