7th Coronavirus Death Was 23-Year-Old Pregnant Woman; Dept. of Health Reports 16 New Cases

The territory's 7th coronavirus death, which was confirmed by the V.I. Dept. of Health Wednesday, was a 23-year-old pregnant woman in St. Thomas, three people with knowledge of the matter have confirmed to the Consortium. D.O.H. has yet to provide information about the deceased. The woman was said to be four months pregnant and arrived at the Schneider Regional Medical Center in distress.

On Wednesday evening, the department reported 16 new cases of the virus: 9 on St. Croix and 7 on St. Thomas. Six of the St. Croix cases were transmitted through close contact, with the other categories of travel and community transmission seeing 1 each. One case was also under investigation.

On St. Thomas, 4 of the 7 cases were transmitted via community spread. Travel and close contact registered 1 each, and 1 case was under investigation. 

St. John remained unchanged at 15 confirmed cases.

Currently D.O.H. is tracking 147 active cases out of a total of 336 positives. As of Wednesday 182 people had recovered from the virulent disease, according to the health department. Fifty-four tests were pending as of Wednesday.

To date, 7,890 tests have been performed, with 7,500 returning negative.

Through Wednesday, St. Croix had 98 active cases, St. Thomas had 42 and 7 of the 15 St. John cases were active as well.
