The V.I. Dept. of Health on Monday announced the 86th death related to Covid-19 in the U.S. Virgin Islands.
"After further investigating cause of death and ensuring notification of next of kin, the Virgin Islands Department of Health is saddened to confirm the territory’s eighty-sixth death related to COVID-19. The deceased is a 61-year-old female on St. Croix," D.O.H. said.
Speaking during the territory's Covid-19 response update Monday, Health Commissioner Justa Encarnacion said the Omicron variant of Covid-19 had not been identified in the USVI or on the mainland U.S. as of Monday, though the strain may already be here.
Governor Albert Bryan said he would hold off on easing restrictions further in light of the fast-spreading Covid-19 strain.
As of Monday there were 82 active cases territory-wide: 70 on St. Croix, 11 on St. Thomas and 1 on St. John. There were three persons hospitalized for Covid-19 at the Juan F. Luis Hospital, none of whom were ventilated, and there were no hospitalizations on St. Thomas.
