The Covid-related death of a 58-year-old woman was the second such announcement in one day by the V.I. Dept. of Health, which only an hour earlier announced that a 62-year-old St. John woman had died from the virus.

"After further investigating cause of death and ensuring notification of next of kin, the Virgin Islands Department of Health is saddened to confirm the territory’s forty-third death related to COVID-19. The deceased is a 58-year-old female on St. Thomas," D.O.H. Wednesday.

The territory reported 305 Covid-19 cases Monday, down from 401 last week, providing an encouraging anecdotal sign that the Delta variant's spread may be leveling off, though it is too early to say for certain.

On Sunday, Governor Albert Bryan told the Consortium that vaccination against Covid-19 saw a sharp increase last week, a sign that the Delta variant-induced surge in active infections and rising Covid-related deaths in the territory were pushing Virgin Islanders to get vaccinated against the virus.

According to the governor, over 1,200 Virgin Islanders got vaccinated against Covid-19 last week. "It looks like we're going to keep that trend for a while," he said.
