The V.I. Dept. of Health late Monday announced the 104th death in the U.S. Virgin Islands related to the coronavirus. Also in the territory, Covid-19 cases that shattered records during the Omicron surge late December to early January, have substantially diminished, with total cases below 300 territory-wide.
"After further investigating cause of death and ensuring notification of next of kin, the Virgin Islands Department of Health is saddened to confirm the territory’s one hundred and fourth (104th) death related to COVID-19. The deceased is a 68-year-old female on St. Thomas," D.O.H. said. "Commissioner [Justa] Encarnacion would like to share condolences from the entire Department of Health to the family of the deceased."
According to the health department, as of Monday there were 267 active Covid-19 infections territory-wide: 175 on St. Croix, 72 on St. Thomas and 19 on St. John. The 7-day positivity rate stood at 3.68 percent Monday.
D.O.H. said it continues to work to slow the spread of Covid-19. "Please continue to follow these precautionary measures: practice social distancing, wear a mask when in company of others outside of those in your household, clean frequently used areas thoroughly, and wash your hands often with soap and warm water," the department urged.
