St. Croix Abattoir To Close For Two Weeks

ST. CROIX -- Department of Agriculture Commissioner Carlos Robles announced on Wednesday that the abattoir here will be closed for two weeks -- February 8-19 -- as the department performs "general maintenance" on the facility. According to the release, the abattoir will resume its normal slaughtering activities on Monday, February 22. D.O.A. says it regrets any inconvenience the closing may cause, and if there are any questions or concerns, contact Cardinal Richardson at 778-0997 ext. 243. According to information found on D.O.A.'s website, the territory's abattoir division provides a safe, sanitary, and humane slaughtering services for livestock farmers. Operations at the abattoir are regulated by laws of the territory, and requires that all animals whose meat will be offered for sale in public places be slaughtered at government-controlled slaughterhouses which are subject to inspection and approval by the commissioner of health.
